24 May 2008 - Lindow 2nd XI vs Lymm OP (h)
HUGHES & COLDWELL BLOW AWAY LYMM OP
Lindow CC 232 for 8 (17 pts) - Lymm OP CC 162 for 9 (10 pts)
On a warm but very blustery day at Upcast Lane, Lindow went out to bat against a young Lymm side.
The early loss of Wild in the first over brought Clarke to the wicket who with Pate carried the total to 38 before Pate was bowled for 5.
However Lindow’s steady start was ruined with quick loss of Kendrick (6), Clarke (37) and Burrows (6) in the 13th, 14th and 15th overs. This left Lindow in what looked serious trouble with the score on 59 for 5 off just 15 overs. However it did bring together the Lindow’s hero’s of the day, Hughes and Coldwell and with them a mighty batting revival! With what became a batting master class, with some masterful stroke play and both of them effortlessly caressing the ball to all parts of the Upcast Lane ground. Hughes quickly went on to his 50 and what looked to be a certain 100 in the form he was in, only to be run out for 76 for a 6th wicket partnership of 129. Coldwell quickly followed suit, partnered by McClymont (10) to pass his 50 and on to 74 before being caught in the deep. This partnership allowed Lindow the luxury of declaring on 232 for 8 with 5 overs to spare. Though most of Lymm’s bowlers had been put to the sword by Hughes and Colwell. Opening bowler Evans managed to return figures of 4-54-12.
With a strong bowling line up and a large total on the board, Lindow went out confidently to knock over Lymm. The first half of a fearsomely quick open spell of bowling from Hughes was survived well by Lymms openers. Hughes and Lindow’s first breakthrough came in the form of a sharp, still rising catch, taken behind by wicket keeper Clarke. Hughes broke through once more near the end of his 14over opening spell removing Kimber for 23 and then going on to take 2 more quick top order wickets with his next couple of overs. The introduction of Coldwell to the attack saw the wickets continue to fall as number 6, 7 and 8 all fell quickly to Coldwell. However a solid looking 9th wicket partnership of Evans and Charville started to look likely of surviving the remaining overs. So with no impression being made by the other bowlers Burrows was brought on to “buy a wicket” which after an expensive first over worked with Charville falling LBW to the leg spinners 2nd over. With Coldwell taking the penultimate wicket with the first ball of and last over Lindow looked in with the chance of getting the 25 points. This was to no avail though as Kimber Jr played out the last 5 balls of the match leaving Evans on a very stubborn but well deserved 56 not out to cap his good all round performance for Lymm and Lymm on 162 for 9. Hughes and Coldwell finished the day and their superb all round performances off with bowling figures of 3-46-18 for Hughes and 4-3-6 for Coldwell.
With Lindow coming back from 59 for 5 down it showed some real resilience and resolve for Lindow to earn themselves 17pts.. However after being in with a chance of all 25pts I’m sure Lindow will feel slightly disappointed falling short of the winning line by one wicket.
